A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
