The megacity Wakes Up to Hazardous Pollution After Celebrations
Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" category.
Alarming Air Quality Readings
Several parts of the city showed an pollution measurement above 500, which equals 10x the safe limit set by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, readings of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times exceeding healthy standards.
Firecracker Restrictions and Current Developments
Since 2020, authorities had maintained a complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the deadly smog that blankets the capital as winter begins.
Nevertheless recently, the current regional administration approached the highest court to request a easing of the restrictions.
The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Court Decision and Implementation
Despite concerns of environmental and health activists, the court complied with the request, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener version.
Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi registered contamination reaching highest levels around late evening to extremely hazardous readings seen during celebrations in at least recent memory.
Regional Consequences
Extensive ignition of firecrackers during Diwali also initiated a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on pollutants originating in India following the celebrations.
Long-Standing Pollution Issue
Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the capital have remained as a major problem for more than 15 years, with the situation continuing to worsen.
Around the festival period, the amount of hazardous particulate matter in the environment has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the worst records ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously viewed as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.
Diverse Contamination Sources
The problem in the city is caused by a convergence of different contributors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, garbage fires and haze from farm burning in adjacent regions of neighboring agricultural zones.
In these regions, rural residents illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, producing dangerous haze that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.
Medical and Financial Consequences
Both financial and medical toll on the approximately 33 million residents residing in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to various studies.
The contaminated air results in elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung disorders, and can potentially cause malignancies.
The pollution is projected to be causing ten thousand untimely deaths per year in the city.
